New Google Favicon Drops the Colors, Keeps the “G”

August 13, 2012 By Stephen Lee Leave a Comment

I noticed the new Google favicon today when using the world’s most popular search engine.

Google’s Old Favicon

In case you don’t remember, the old favicon featured the iconic “G” and four colors in the background:

The new version features the same “G,” but it simplifies the background colors to just one — a calming, light blue color:

Is it possible that this new favicon is indicative of a larger rebranding of the current search giant?

I haven’t been able to find any information confirming or denying this suspicion from the horse’s mouth, but the blogosphere is taking note of the new design.

Avid Netizen currently uses the default favicon for the Genesis framework, but when I get a logo that I’m happy with, I will make a corresponding favicon to help make my site more memorable and burn my branding into your brain.

Do you have a custom favicon for your site? To what extent does it convey the goals and purposes of your site?

What do you think of Google’s new favicon? Do you think a larger rebranding is in the works?
